Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin confirmed Monday that the team hosted WR Chad Ochocinco for a workout.
“We’re doing our homework,” Philbin said, according to the Palm Beach Post.
The Patriots released Ochocinco last week. In his one season with New England, Ochocinco was predominantly a nonfactor, catching 15 passes for 276 yards and one touchdown in 15 games. In 2010, he had 831 yards receiving and four touchdowns with the Bengals.
The 34-year-old had six consecutive 1,000-yard receiving seasons from 2002-07.
The way we see it
The Dolphins are lacking in depth at wide receiver after trading Brandon Marshall. Currently, Brian Hartline and Davone Bess are the team’s top two receivers with a lot of youth and question marks behind them. Ochocinco did not get signed right away, so he apparently didn’t “wow” the Dolphins’ brass. Teams need to see if Ochocinco has anything left, and if last year’s lack of production was due more to the complex Patriots’ offense as opposed to Ochocinco losing a step or two.
