The Patriots released WR Anthony Gonzalez, the team announced on Tuesday.

Gonzalez, who has played in only 11 games in the past three seasons with the Colts, signed with the Pats in the spring. The former first-round pick had 57 catches for 664 yards and four touchdowns in 2008, but has been injury-prone since.

The team also announced the signings of OL Jamey Richard, TE Nick Melillo and seventh-round CB Alfonzo Dennard.

Richard tried out for the team last week. He played in nine games with no starts last season for the Colts. In his four-year career, Richard has played in 48 games with 11 starts.

Melillo is an undrafted rookie out of Kentucky. Dennard, a rookie out of Nebraska, was considered a mid-round talent before an arrest knocked him down draft boards. Click here for his PFW scouting report.

The way we see it

Gonzalez seemed hopeful to get his career back on track in Foxborough, but with several receivers to battle with for a roster spot, his odds were slim to begin with. The Patriots still have more work to do at the position in terms of cutting veterans, and Gonzalez was the first to go. If he can prove he's healthy, though, a team would likely give the former first-rounder a flier.
