Giants WR Hakeem Nicks had successful surgery Friday, with a screw inserted in his foot to speed the healing of a fractured bone, the New York Post reported.

Hicks broke the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot Thursday while running a pass route during organized team activities. Foot and ankle specialist Dr. Robert Anderson performed the surgery in Charlotte, N.C.

The Giants have said that Nicks should be able to return to action in about 12 weeks, which would mean that Hicks would miss all of training camp but should be back in time for the regular-season opener Sept. 5 against the Cowboys if his recovery goes according to schedule.

The way we see it

There is a rumor that Nicks might be able to return much sooner than the team’s 12-week estimate. Nevertheless, Nicks was the Giants’ second-leading receiver last season behind Victor Cruz, and the offseason departure of No. 3 WR Mario Manningham, combined with Hicks’ injury, potentially puts more pressure on rookie second-round pick Rueben Randle to contribute immediately.
