The NFL and the union that represents its officials have agreed to federal mediation in their stalemate over a new contract.
George Cohen, director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, who mediated the dispute between the league and the players before last year’s lockout, will mediate this dispute, as well. No dates or sites have been designated for the mediation.
The contract between the NFL and its officials expired at the end of the 2011 season. The league has reportedly made some preliminary inquiries into hiring replacement officials if the stalemate isn’t resolved before the start of the preseason.
