Jets DT Kenrick Ellis plead guilty on Monday to assault and battery charges from a 2010 fight in Virginia, and was sentenced to jail time starting this summer.
Ellis was sentenced to 179 days in jail, with 89 suspended. His attorney told the Associated Press that the defender likely would serve 45 days when he reports to jail on June 15.
New York’s third-round pick in 2011, Ellis faced charges stemming from a college fight while he was at Hampton (Va.). During Monday’s hearing, he entered an Alford plea, meaning he would not admit guilt, but does acknowledge that prosecutors could prove the case against him were it to go to trial.
Last season as a rookie, Ellis played in five games and recorded seven tackles.
The way we see it
Ellis isn't in line to start, let alone compete for a starting job, but this is a crucial offseason for him. Ellis entered the NFL with some raw abilities in the form of his size and strength combination, but he needs time to continue to refine those skills.
