The marijuana arrests of three Lions players this offseason doesn’t shock former Detroit OT Lomas Brown. In fact, he believes it’s merely an indication of larger, leaguewide problem.

“Sounds like these guys were being careless,” Brown, now an ESPN analyst, told The Detroit News. “I know the Lions have to feel disappointed, especially after such a great season.”

All three players are members of the team’s 2011 draft class: RB Mikel Leshoure, DT Nick Fairley and OT Johnny Culbreath. All three are subject to possible suspensions by the NFL.

Brown estimates that at least 50 percent of NFL players use marijuana recreationally or as a way to relieve stress, down from what he claims was nearly 90 percent of players using marijuana when he came into the league in 1985.

Other sources have reported wide-ranging estimates of marijuana use in the league. An ESPN report last month indicated that about 70 percent of players at the 2012 NFL Combine admitted to smoking marijuana. On the other hand, reports by the NCAA and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette placed the figure for marijuana smokers between 20-27 percent of football players.

“I just don't think you'll be able to curb this,” Brown said.
