In no way does the hip injury suffered by new OG Mackenzy Bernadeau remove him from consideration as a starter, but it does open up competition at the position. Bernadeau, who spent four seasons in Carolina before signing with the Cowboys this offseason as a free agent, has undergone surgery on his hip, reportedly repairing a tear there, and the expected recovery time could have him sidelined for up to 12 weeks. That would eliminate him from participation in the team’s June minicamp, but club officials hope he can return sometime before or right after the start of training camp in late July. In the meantime, the team will sort through its list of possible replacements. Both OG spots are technically open, and fellow free-agent addition Nate Livings has said he can play on either side, which helps the flexibility. But don’t count out second-year OGs David Arkin and Bill Nagy as candidates to step in, and the loser of the center battle between Phil Costa and Kevin Kowalski also could be tried at guard. Expect to see some mixing and matching until the team knows more about Bernadeau’s status.
