Saints LB Jonathan Vilma, who was suspended for the entire 2012 season for his participation in the team’s bounty program the past three years, filed a lawsuit on Thursday against NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for defamation.

In the suit, filed in the U.S. District Court of Eastern Louisiana, Vilma “seeks to recover damages for defamatory statements made by Goodell.” The suit says the commissioner “made public statements concerning Vilma which were false, defamatory and injurious to Vilma’s professional and personal reputation.”

In the lawsuit, Vilma denies he ever participated in the bounty program, targeted an opposing player in a clear violation of NFL rules, attempted to injure opponents, or offered money to teammates as a reward for injuring opponents.

The linebacker aims to receive compensatory damages from Goodell for the time he has missed because of the suspension, along with punitive damages for the commissioner’s comments and conduct.
