An arbitration hearing will be held on May 30 to see if commissioner Roger Goodell has jurisdiction to punish the players involved in the team’s bounty program.

The NFLPA asked arbitrator Stephen Burbank to rule if the players should be punished for their roles in the bounty program. The union argues that Burbank should hear the appeals from Jonathan Vilma, Will Smith, Anthony Hargrove and Scott Fujita.

Another hearing is being held Wednesday before arbitrator Shyam Das on whether Goodell can discipline players for actions that were committed before the new Collective Bargaining Agreement was signed in August.

According to Judy Battista of The New York Times, the league might make public some of the evidence against the players, with sources masked, after the players’ appeals are completed. Much of the evidence has been kept from the public to protect sources who cooperated with the league.
