Browns second-year DT Phil Taylor had his torn left pectoral muscle surgically repaired on Wednesday, and the surgery "went well," club vice president of media relations Neal Gulkis told the Akron Beacon Journal.

Also, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer quoted an anoynmous source as saying that "everybody's optimistic (Taylor is) going to have a significant impact on the team this season."

Taylor, 24, started all 16 games in 2011, recording 59 tackles and four sacks. He suffered the injury last week.

The way we see it

In Taylor and Ahtyba Rubin, the Browns have one of the NFL's better DT tandems. Taylor is one of the cornerstones of the defense, and anything he can give the defense this season would help. That said, Taylor's recovery time will be "more months than weeks," head coach Pat Shurmur said last week.
