Buccaneers DE Da’Quan Bowers suffered a torn Achilles tendon during the team’s offseason workouts and will likely miss the entire 2012 season. The team reported that Bowers will undergo surgery for the injury on Friday.

Set to enter his second NFL season, Bowers had a solid rookie season. He played in all 16 games, starting in six, and finished with 25 tackles and 1½ sacks. The Buccaneers had expected him to play a larger role on the defense this coming year.

The team did not announce how serious the tear is, and there is still a chance Bowers could return at some point during the season. However, it is expected he would, at a minimum, begin the year on the physically-unable-to-perform list.

The way we see it

Bowers showed some flashes as a rookie, and the Bucs were counting on him taking another step in 2012. He was supposed to share time at defensive left end with Michael Bennett.

Tampa Bay doesn’t have great depth at the position, and GM Mark Dominik might have to take a look around the scrap heap in free agency. The Bucs were big spenders this offseason, but they have the salary-cap flexibility to address their needs.
