Eagles DT Mike Patterson spoke to PFW in February about his life-changing diagnosis of arteriovenous malformation, a tangle of blood vessels, following a frightening seizure in training camp, and he reiterated that he fully intends to compete in 2012. Patterson started 15 games last season, with medication controlling the problem, and his January surgery to correct the malformation is not expected to keep him out of training camp. The drafting of first-round DT Fletcher Cox was not necessarily a move to replace Patterson, who played fairly well last season, in 2012. In fact, Eagles sources believe the addition of Cox could help Patterson and keep him more in a first- and second-down role that could make him more effective on a per-snap basis. Interestingly, Eagles head coach Andy Reid said Cox could figure in as a big defensive end in spurts, and the move really gives the team a ton of DL flexibility.
