The Browns have traded up and swapped picks with the Vikings to acquire the No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 NFL draft, according to multiple reports.

The Browns gave up a fourth-, fifth- and seventh-round pick to move up to No. 3.

Cleveland will presumably draft Alabama RB Trent Richardson, someone that the Buccaneers, who hold the No. 5 pick, reportedly coveted and also could have moved up.

The Vikings, who now hold the No. 4 pick, could move down again.

The way we see it

Considering the Browns came into this draft with 13 picks, and considering their offense has been a big problem for several seasons, surrendering a fourth-, fifth- and seventh-round pick for the player they want — very likely Richardson or WR Justin Blackmon — isn’t a major price to pay. This is shades of 2004, when the Browns moved up from No. 7 into Detroit’s No. 6 spot in Round One to select TE Kellen Winslow Jr. In that case, the Browns gave up a second-rounder. All things considered, the Browns paid a reasonable amount, considering their circumstances.
