In the following tables, we focus on each team's top three needs going into the draft, explaining why they need to bolster those positions. We also show where the team ranked last season in rushing and passing offense, run and pass defense and turnover differential. In addition, we list notable offseason additions and subtractions to the roster and identify the offensive (OC) and defensive (DC) coordinators of the club (an asterisk indicates the coordinator is new in 2012).

1 2 3 NOTES
Buffalo OLT WR CB Without Demetress Bell, a Day One starter on the blind side would be preferred in Buffalo. Even if the team is confident in Chris Hairson, depth needs to be added at tackle. We saw last year that Ryan Fitzpatrick needs more weapons at receiver when defenses clamp down on Stevie Johnson. On defense, the D-line has been fortified, but the corners struggled last season and could use an upgrade, especially considering the team has an aging and injury-prone Terrance McGee and Leodis McKelvin, who lost his starting spot last season.
Miami  QB DE-OLB WR Jeff Ireland needs to come out of this draft with Miami’s franchise quarterback of the future. Matt Moore and David Garrard are not the answers. The Dolphins also need another pass rusher to complement Cameron Wake following the retirement of Jason Taylor. Koa Misi wasn’t able to pick up where he left off from his rookie ‘10 season and Wake needs a bookend to get after the passer. The team lacks weapons at wideout, especially after trading Brandon Marshall. Brian Hartline is currently Miami’s No. 1 receiver.
New England  S DE-OLB CB Safety was a revolving door last season in Foxborough. Patrick Chung is solid, but he is not great in coverage. The Pats added Steve Gregory but still need help in the back end. Up front, the Patriots lost Mark Anderson in free agency and have not re-signed Andre Carter. Those two combined for 20 sacks last season, and the Pats need a pass rusher, preferably a player with versatility to play defensive end and outside linebacker. Back to the secondary, Bill Belichick has made it a habit of drafting corners, and considering Devin McCourty’s 2011 struggles and Ras-I Dowling’s injury history, a lock-down corner would be a big help.
N.Y. Jets  OLB S WR Rex Ryan’s aggressive, turnover-creating defense needs a player who can consistently get into the backfield. Calvin Pace and Aaron Maybin aren’t enough coming off the edges. In the back end, the team did not re-sign Jim Leonhard, and Eric Smith struggled in coverage last season. The Jets did add LaRon Landry, but another safety is crucial to improving the back end, especially when the Jets play the Patriots’ tight ends twice a year. On offense, Mark Sanchez could use a big, fast, outside receiver who could stretch the field and also be a red-zone threat, especially with Plaxico Burress not being re-signed.

1 2 3 NOTES
Baltimore  OL WR S The Ravens have their share of OL concerns. C Matt Birk is nearing the end of his career. OLT Bryant McKinnie is in the last year of his contract. OLG Ben Grubbs departed in free agency. The WR corps could stand to be upgraded. FS Ed Reed will be 34 in September, and the Ravens lost reserve safeties Haruki Nakamura and Tom Zbikowski in free agency.
Cincinnati  CB WR OL The Bengals need another outside receiver opposite A.J. Green. Jerome Simpson, a starter a season ago, signed with Minnesota. A first-round wideout could immediately start. An early-round cornerback could be penciled in for a major role, too. Guard looms the primary concern among the O-line, but ORT Andre Smith is in the last year of his contract.
Cleveland  QB WR RB It would be an upset if the Browns didn’t add at each of these positions. Quarterback may be the greatest long-term need, but Colt McCoy, if surrounded with better skill-position talent, very well could show improvement in 2012. Right tackle also looms as a rather glaring need. With a bevy of draft picks, including two first-rounders, Cleveland could come away with multiple first-year starters.
Pittsburgh  NT OG OT NT Casey Hampton is closer to the end than the beginning of a very good career. Both of the Steelers’ starting guards as of the end of 2011 (Doug Legursky and Ramon Foster) are entering the last year of their contracts. The Steelers are expected to give Marcus Gilbert the OLT job, and ORT Willie Colon has been solid when healthy, but Pittsburgh could not be blamed for continuing to look at this position. The LB corps also could use another player or two, with ILB Larry Foote and OLB James Harrison on the wrong side of 30.

1 2 3 NOTES
Houston  OL OLB WR With two new starters on the right side, Houston’s offensive line suddenly has an alarming lack of depth. What’s more, ORG Antoine Caldwell comes with durability concerns and ORT Rashad Butler has never played on the right side. Wade Phillips would like to have three OLBs who can get after the quarterback for his nickel package, plus another guy would help keep Connor Barwin and Brooks Reed fresh. Gary Kubiak is higher on his WR corps than most, but there was a clear void without Andre Johnson last season.
Indianapolis  WR NT TE The Colts have holes at virtually every position, but finding a big-play receiver who can work outside the numbers will greatly benefit new QB Andrew Luck. Head coach Chuck Pagano’s transition to a hybrid 3-4 scheme won’t be successful without a nose tackle who can clog the middle on early downs. Offensive coordinator Bruce Arians likes to use two-TE formations, and the Colts don’t have a pass-catching tight end, nor do they have a consistent in-line blocker who has stayed healthy enough to consistently contribute.
Jacksonville  WR DE OG-C The additions of Laurent Robinson and Lee Evans don’t lessen the Jaguars need for a true No. 1 wideout to make Blaine Gabbert’s life easier. Re-signing Jeremy Mincey was imperative, but he is not the difference maker the Jags' “D” needs to put the unit over the top. Though 35-year-old C Brad Meester continues to get the job done, the Jaguars don’t have his replacement waiting in the wings. 2011 rookie OLG Will Rackley could also benefit from another young lineman who can push him and the rest of the unit.
Tennessee  DE OG-C CB The Titans logged just 28 sacks as a team last season and lacked a consistent pressure piece off the edge to help the “D” get off the field on third downs. Kamerion Wimbley alone doesn’t solve that problem. The Titans think 35-year-old OLG Steve Hutchinson will improve the interior, but the two weak links, C Eugene Amano and ORG Leroy Harris, remain. Head coach Mike Munchak won’t tolerate the poor run blocking from his line again in 2012. CB Alterraun Verner is penciled in to replace Cortland Finnegan, but the Titans could add another young corner to heat up the competition this offseason.

1 2 3 NOTES
Denver  DT RB QB Aiming both to get younger and better at the position, the Broncos will be looking for a starter at defensive tackle in the draft. The players currently atop their depth chart there are Justin Bannan and Ty Warren, ages 33 and 31, respectively, so it's clearly a position the team needs to address. At both running back and quarterback, Denver is set with veteran starters but will be looking for young depth to groom for the future.
Kansas City  NT LB OG The Chiefs believe they are just a few pieces away from being an elite team in the AFC. On defense, the team wants to be stronger up the middle; drafting a nose tackle is nearly guaranteed in the early rounds, and a run-stuffing linebacker will also be added at some point. Offensively, K.C. would like to continue the overhaul of its offensive line but also won't be opposed to adding a talented quarterback or more depth at wide receiver if the opportunity to do so presents itself.
Oakland  OLB CB DT They have the fewest picks in the draft (five), so the Raiders will look mainly to fill specific needs. Last season, Oakland ranked dead last in the NFL vs. the run, so beefing up that unit will be a priority. The team also could use a pass rusher off the edge. Improvement in the secondary will also be necessary, as the team released both of its opening-day starters from a year ago this offseason.
San Diego  OL DE-OLB RB Expect some wheeling and dealing from Chargers GM A.J. Smith. If there's an O-lineman or pass rusher he finds exceptional, Smith isn't afraid to trade up to get him. If there's not, it wouldn't be a shock to see him move back and add more picks. Both of the top two needs will be addressed early on, however, no matter where the team picks. At running back, the team would like a speedster who can run and catch the ball out of the backfield, a la Darren Sproles, who left the team last offseason and was never replaced.

1 2 3 NOTES
Dallas  DL S WR The Cowboys have to improve the defensive front, either with an end or a nose, moving NT Jay Ratliff out to end. The team has added S Brodney Pool but still could use a strong tackler and leader in the back half. The loss of WR Laurent Robinson (11 TDs) shouldn’t go overlooked. Expect the team to target an outside receiver, and preferably one with return ability.
N.Y. Giants  OT DL WR-TE The Giants have no glaring needs but could use a developmental tackle to groom. They always seek DL depth, whether it’s a true need or not, which has helped them win two Super Bowls in four years. After Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz, there are questions at wide receiver with the loss of Mario Manningham. Jerrel Jernigan, Ramses Barden and Domenik Hixon have combined for 18 receptions the past two seasons. Tight end still stands as a major need with Jake Ballard facing a long rehab and Martellus Bennett in line to start.
Philadelphia  DT  QB RB Andy Reid almost always drafts in the trenches. He has averaged taking 1.8 O-linemen and 1.5 D-linemen since 1999. Last year, the OL depth was fortified, so look for defensive-front help. The Eagles have publicly reaffirmed their commitment to Michael Vick, with GM Howie Roseman saying the team is “all in” with Vick. But Vick’s contract allows the team to get out somewhat easily after this season, and Reid also loves to stockpile quarterbacks. LeSean McCoy was fabulous in 2011 but was on the field too much. McCoy could sign an extension soon, but the Eagles must protect themselves.
Washington  QB ORT S-ILB Quarterback won’t be a need for long. The Redskins will draft Robert Griffin III and turn over to him the keys to the offense. The ’Skins don't pick again until No. 69, but knowing who their QB will be is worth that price in their minds. ORT Jammal Brown is working back from an injured hip, but can they count on him to start? SS LaRon Landry signed with the Jets, and talented question marks — Brandon Meriweather, Cedric Griffin and Tanard Jackson — will vie for starting jobs. ILB London Fletcher is back, and Perry Riley looked mostly good (except in coverage), but more depth would be nice.

1 2 3 NOTES
Chicago  DE OLT WR The Bears do not have an edge rusher capable of consistently taking advantage of the one-on-one matchups that are provided when playing opposite Julius Peppers. They need more explosiveness from that spot, and J'Marcus Webb needs some competition at offensive left tackle. A wide receiver with vertical speed to complement Brandon Marshall would be very useful with the uncertainty surrounding Johnny Knox.
Detroit  CB RB OT The Lions lack a clear-cut starting cornerback opposite Chris Houston and had major problems against potent passing games late last season, so more help is needed on the back end of the defense. Running back is again a need. Jahvid Best missed most of last season because of a concussion. Also, Mikel Leshoure comes off an Achilles injury and has twice been arrested on marijuana charges in the offseason. A young tackle to be groomed behind Jeff Backus could provide short- and long-term help for the line.
Green Bay  DE-OLB FS C Green Bay’s biggest need continues to be another pass rusher, or two, who can provide consistent pressure besides OLB Clay Matthews, after the team ranked a lowly 26th in sacks last season (only six sacks in the last seven games, counting playoffs). FS Nick Collins was cut because of questions about his recovery from a serious neck injury, so a replacement for the three-time Pro Bowl free safety is also high on the team’s wish list. Veteran free-agent addition Jeff Saturday would appear to be a solid short-term replacement for Mike Wells at center, but Saturday turns 37 in June and can’t be counted on for too long.
Minnesota CB OL WR It’s a toss-up between corner and left tackle as the biggest void. In a division with Aaron Rodgers, Matthew Stafford and Jay Cutler, pass coverage carries a premium, even in the Tampa-2 defense. With better coverage last season, DE Jared Allen might have had 25 or more sacks. Yet, you can make the case the team must help QB Christian Ponder. It needs to start with a left tackle, and those players typically are not floating around in the lower parts of the draft. Even with the signing of Jerome Simpson, who will be suspended for the first three games, more WR help is needed.

1 2 3 NOTES
Atlanta OLT DL TE Sam Baker is still looking to prove he can stay healthy and be a quality protector of Matt Ryan's blind side, and the Falcons should make adding more competition at that key position their priority. They need more of a push on the interior and off the edge from the front four, and a tight end to complement, and eventually replace, Tony Gonzalez continues to be on the team's radar.
Carolina  DT CB LB Carolina has to improve at every level of its defense to become a more balanced and competitive team. The front seven will be infused with players returning from injury, but the Panthers still lack a true playmaking force on the interior defensive line. They are short on starting-caliber cornerbacks and have to protect themselves in case the injury bug bites again, by adding quality depth at linebacker.
New Orleans  DT DE WR New defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo is going to need better talent up front to create the kind of disruption he wants to see from his defensive line. The Saints need to add competition for DT Sedrick Ellis, who is entering his contract year after a disappointing season, and there is a void to fill at wide receiver following Robert Meachem's departure in free agency.
Tampa Bay  RB LB CB-S A dependable bell-cow back would take pressure off QB Josh Freeman and could thrive with a big, physical interior offensive line opening holes for him. There is an opening for a starting linebacker, and the Bucs could use a player to plug into the middle and help give their run defense the identity it lacks. There is plenty of room for improvement in the secondary, too.

1 2 3 NOTES
Arizona  ORT WR OLB With the Cardinals seeming reluctant to re-sign injury-prone incumbent ORT Brandon Keith, a stud tackle or guard — with free-agent addition Adam Snyder possibly moving to tackle — looks like the team’s top need. It appears Larry Fitzgerald might beg to differ with that assessment, though, if his plea to Sports Illustrated’s Peter King for the Cardinals to take fellow WR Mike Floyd with the first pick is any indication. A solid No. 2 WR candidate to complement Fitzgerald would certainly come in handy. So would a few more pressure-packing 'backers off the edge in the same mold as youngsters Sam Acho and O’Brien Schofield.
San Francisco  OG WR DT The only real hole the Niners would appear to have is at the ORG position vacated by Adam Snyder, who signed with the Cardinals. A top-ranked guard who could immediately challenge youngsters Daniel Kilgore and Mike Person and veteran swing man Alex Boone and provide badly needed depth makes lots of sense. Free-agent additions Mario Manningham and Randy Moss help fill a major need at wide receiver, but more help is still needed at the position, especially with there being no guarantee that Moss has anything left in the tank. More depth for the tireless D-line would be a good thing.
Seattle  DE LB RB The recent free-agent addition of Barrett Ruud as a short-term replacement at middle linebacker for David Hawthorne moves the DE position to the forefront in the need department. The defense is in dire need of another pass rusher off the edge up front, besides the underrated Chris Clemons, who registered 11 of the team’s 33 sacks last season. Ruud helps at linebacker, but a great deal more depth is needed at the position both inside and outside. With UFA Justin Forsett not expected back, another change-of-pace back besides Leon Washington to spell workhorse Marshawn Lynch would be a welcome addition.
St. Louis  WR DT OLG Sam Bradford remains in dire need of a dynamic No. 1-caliber wideout who can stretch the field and add some big-play pop to the league’s weakest offense. The team needs to come up with new starters at the DT position alongside free-agent addition Kendall Langford and probably at left guard, where the front-runner entering the draft is Bryan Mattison, who started the last four games last season at right guard after being claimed off waivers from the Ravens.
