The Vikings agreed to terms on a one-year deal with former Bengals WR Jerome Simpson, Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer first reported.

Simpson, who is reportedly facing a three-game suspension after he pleaded guilty to felony drug charges, visited the Vikings, as well as the Rams, this offseason.

Last season, Simpson played in all 16 games with 14 starts for Cincinnati, catching 50 passes for 725 yards and four touchdowns. In five games in 2010, he had 20 catches for 277 yards and three scores.

The way we see it

Simpson fills the Vikings’ need for a vertical receiver — they had none previously. That keeps Percy Harvin in the slot, where he’s most effective, and at least gives the threat of a downfield pass, which Christian Ponder really didn’t have a year ago. Simpson’s three-game suspension keeps him out of games against the Jaguars, Colts and 49ers, meaning he won’t miss a divisional game. It puts Simpson back in the lineup in a measuring stick game against the Lions in Detroit. Those first three games include two strong defensive clubs (Jaguars, 49ers), but the suspension was lower than some had expected, prompting the Vikings to strike now and sign him.
