The Falcons could be without one of their top defensive players when they gather for the start of their offseason program April 23.

CB Brent Grimes had the franchise tag applied to him in March, but he has not signed the one-year tender and is seeking a long-term deal. The two sides have until July 16 to work out a multiyear contract.

There have been no indications from Grimes’ camp that he is interested in signing the tag, which would guarantee him a salary of $10.2 million in 2012. He can participate in offseason workouts despite not being under contract, though. Grimes would have to sign a waiver, and at least one player who received the franchise tag this offseason but has not signed it, Titans S Michael Griffin, has said he intends to report to his team’s offseason program.

The Falcons will be implementing a new defensive system under coordinator Mike Nolan this offseason and Grimes eventually could have some catching up to do if he opts to stay away from the club’s offseason activities.
