First, the good news: The eye injury sustained by Jaguars DT Terrance Knighton in a Jacksonville night club in the wee hours the morning of April 8 is not considered career-threatening and there are no criminal charges expected to be filed against Knighton.
But the injury, which comes on the heels of "Pot Roast" reporting to the club’s first offseason workouts in the best shape since his rookie season, could make it more difficult for Knighton to earn the new long-term deal GM Gene Smith promised if he kept his weight down and played well in 2012.
While it remains to be seen how long the injury will sideline Knighton, it is possible it will prevent him from participating in the rest of the club’s offseason program spanning through the end of May, which, in turn, could make it difficult for him to keep his weight down. The Jaguars are unlikely to be sympathetic toward Knighton in this scenario given Smith’s well-known requirement of his players not making negative headlines off the field.
