The Steelers signed veteran TE Leonard Pope on Tuesday, the team announced.

Pope had been with the Chiefs for the last three seasons. In 2011, he played in all 16 games with 10 starts, recording 24 catches for 247 yards and one touchdown. A former third-round pick of the Cardinals, Pope has nine career touchdown catches.

Steelers TE Weslye Saunders is suspended for the first four games of the 2012 season for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

The way we see it

Pope’s addition improves the club’s TE depth. Heath Miller, David Johnson and Saunders were the club’s tight ends a season ago, and TEs Wes Lyons and Jamie McCoy are also on the offseason roster. Johnson was the club’s primary blocking back a season ago.
