The Cowboys claimed QB Rudy Carpenter off waivers from Tampa Bay on Thursday.
Carpenter has been in the league for three seasons but has played in only one game and hasn’t thrown a pass in regular-season action.
This is Carpenter’s second stint with Dallas. The team signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2009. He lost a training-camp competition with then-rookie Stephen McGee and was signed to the practice squad, but the Buccaneers signed him to their active roster on Nov. 23, 2009.
Since then, Carpenter has bounced back and forth between Tampa’s active roster and its practice squad.
The way we see it
With Tony Romo entrenched as the starter and recently signed Kyle Orton the backup, Carpenter will again challenge McGee for the No. 3 job. McGee is entering the final year of his rookie contract.
