The Lions re-signed RB Kevin Smith to a one-year deal on Tuesday.
Smith began his career in Detroit in 2008 with a stellar rookie season, compiling 976 rushing yards and 286 receiving yards. He again topped 1,100 combined rushing-receiving yards in 2009, playing in 13 games, but injuries limited him to only six games in 2010.
The Lions did not tender Smith following the 2010 season. He was re-signed on Nov. 7 and had a breakout game just 13 days later, rushing for 140 yards and two touchdowns and catching a 28-yard score in a win over the Panthers.
Smith went 72-356-4 rushing and 22-179-3 receiving in 2011. He had 41 total yards in the Lions’ playoff loss to the Saints.
The way we see it
Smith was a great comeback story last season, getting picked back up off the street and igniting Detroit’s rushing attack in Week 11, though he never eclipsed 50 yards rushing in any of his other games. With Jahvid Best and Mikel Leshoure leading the backfield, Smith will drop back down the depth chart for 2012.
