Falcons' plan hinges on improvement from within

Although they haven’t added many new players, the Falcons have not been sitting on their hands this offseason.

They have already re-signed seven of their own players who became, or were due to become, unrestricted free agents and placed the franchise tag on CB Brent Grimes. They have not shut the door on making more moves, as GM Thomas Dimitroff continues to monitor the options available on the open market.

Some of the team’s fans have grown impatient with the lack of major additions made to the roster, but Atlanta has managed to keep the core of its team mostly intact and is expecting significant improvement to come from within in 2012.

Players like DE Ray Edwards and OLT Sam Baker should return in better health after being beat-up last season, and WR Julio Jones and RB Jacquizz Rodgers will benefit from a full offseason. Player development and coaching-staff changes appear to be the two key elements of the Falcons’ plan for improvement this offseason.
