After failing to make much of an impact during his two seasons in Seattle, Charlie Whitehurst has returned to San Diego.

Whitehurst signed a two-year contract with the Chargers on Friday, the team's website reported. After the signing was announced, the team released veteran QB Billy Volek, 35, who had served as Philip Rivers' backup since 2006.

Whitehurst spent four seasons with San Diego as the No. 3 quarterback from 2006 through 2009 without attempting a pass. Then Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll swapped second-round draft picks with the Chargers, dropping down 20 places, and also sent them a 2011 third-round pick in exchange for Whitehurst, whom Seattle then signed to a two-year, $8 million contract, with $2 million more in incentives.

Whitehurst started four games over two seasons in Seattle, posting a 1-3 record as the Seahawks scored 38 points in his four starts. He completed 54.2 percent of his passes and compiled a 64.6 passer rating with Seattle.

Whitehurst is now expected to become the primary backup to Rivers.
