The Jets have agreed to terms with former Raiders free-agent WR Chaz Schilens, the team announced Friday. The terms of the deal weren't announced.

Schilens will be given an opportunity to win the No. 2 WR job opposite Santonio Holmes with Plaxico Burress not expected back.

Schilens, who has missed 20 games over the past three seasons because of injuries, had 23 catches for 271 yards and two touchdowns in 15 games last season, starting five games.

The Jets' new WR coach, Sanjay Lal, was Schilens' position coach in Oakland from 2009 to 2011.

Fantasy spin

The Jets signed WR Chaz Schilens to a one-year deal, but in four pro seasons, he has yet to live up to his talent. Injury-prone, he has never emerged as a legitimate NFL starter or fantasy receiver. Last year with the Raiders he went 23-271-2 on 34 targets and started only five games despite it being his first season since 2008 when he was healthy for most of the season.

Schilens has career totals of 72-902-7 in 44 games and will compete for a starting job across from Santonio Holmes. The Jets' offensive philosophy will be run-heavy next season as they return to a power rushing attack. He will compete with Jeremy Kerley for the No. 2 receiver role and is a late-round flier, at best, in fantasy leagues if he wins the job.

It's always possible he may have turned the corner with his health and his talent may finally come through. That's a big "if," but never say never, as he could become valuable enough as the season wears on to warrant an in-season pickup.
