The Patriots have signed free-agent SS Steve Gregory to a three-year contract. The news was first reported by Gregory's agent, David Canter. Financial terms have not been announced.
Gregory had spent his entire six-year career with the Chargers before signing with New England. He started 13 games last season after San Diego SS Bob Sanders was placed on injured reserve. He finished the season with 67 tackles and an interception, which he returned 26 yards for a touchdown.
It is assumed Gregory will start alongside Patriots FS Patrick Chung. Their starter at strong safety for most of last season — James Ihedigbo — is a free agent.
