The Bears announced they re-signed unrestricted free-agent DE Israel Idonije to a one-year deal Thursday. Financial terms have not been announced.

Idonije, 31, has started all but one game over the past two seasons as the team's left defensive end. He recorded five sacks in 2011 and a career-high eight in ’10.

The Bears are believed to have come close to agreeing to terms on a deal with DE Jeremy Mincey, who likely would have replaced Idonije, on Tuesday night before Mincey re-signed with the Jaguars.

Idonije has been with the Bears since 2004 and has 21 career sacks in eight seasons.

The way we see it

The Bears were obviously looking to upgrade at defensive end and still could in free agency or the draft. Idonije is not an elite pass rusher, but he's been a very solid player and was awarded PFW's 2011 Arthur S. Arkush Humanitarian Award for his incredible foundation work off the field.

He's the kind of player you find a place for, and the Bears are fortunate to have him back in the fold.
