The Panthers have released P Jason Baker in an effort to create more salary-cap space and improve the position.

Baker struggled last season, punting for a net average of just 34.1 yards, his lowest since coming to the team in 2005. Carolina's punt team also allowed three return touchdowns in 2011, partially because of Baker's issues kicking the ball away from elite returners.

Baker, an 11-year veteran, was set to make $1.55 million next season, so the team likely believes it can find a cheaper and more effective player at the position.

"We talked to Jason and his agent and told them that it came down to a salary cap decision," Panthers GM Marty Hurney said. "We appreciate everything he has done for us. He's been a model Panther since he came to the organization."
