In an attempt to bolster their linebacking corps, the Chargers have signed OLB Jarret Johnson to a four-year contract. Financial terms have not been announced.

Johnson has played his entire nine-year career up to this point with the Ravens. He has started all 16 games each of the past five seasons and been a solid pass rusher and run stuffer playing alongside All Pros Ray Lewis and Terrell Suggs.

In 2011, Johnson had 56 tackles, 2½ sacks and three passes defensed. He ranked No. 73 on PFW's ranking of the top 100 free agents.

The Chargers also announced they have re-singed TE Kory Sperry to a one-year contract.

The way we see it

The Chargers have long sought to find a complement for OLB Shaun Phillips, and they might have done so by landing Johnson. A physical player who is great at stopping the run, he should fit in well in the Chargers' 3-4 defense. He likely will play on first and second down for the team, then be replaced by Antwan Barnes in pass-rushing situations.
