After spending big early in free agency, the Buccaneers have made a move to create more cap room, releasing veteran C Jeff Faine.
Faine has been a consistent player for Tampa Bay, starting 15 games for the team last season. However, with the addition of OG Carl Nicks, the team no longer needed him as much up front, and it saves approximately $6 million by letting him go.
The way we see it
Faine missed 13 games over the past three seasons with injuries but was a very solid player when healthy and provided leadership on a very young team, helping QB Josh Freeman along through the early stages of his career.
With Faine moving on, Jeremy Zuttah, who has filled in at center when Faine has missed time in the past and also started at guard, is expected to become the starter at center playing between Carl Nicks and Davin Joseph, who make up arguably the league's best guard tandem.
