The Patriots have tendered their backup quarterback, Brian Hoyer, at the second-round level, according to multiple reports.

The second-round tender this year is worth $1.927 million, according to's Jason La Canfora. If a team wants to sign Hoyer, it would have to give up a second-round pick, assuming the Patriots don't match.

In three seasons, Hoyer has appeared in 13 regular-season games, completing 27-of-43 passes for 286 yards and one touchdown.

The way we see it

We had heard that the Patriots would offer the highest-possible tender, at a first-round level, to Hoyer to make sure they keep their No. 2 QB. Hoyer entered the league as an undrafted free agent, so this is still an increase, but it could open the door for a team to consider poaching him. The team does value him, and Ryan Mallett is not yet ready to assume the backup role.
