The 49ers have signed former Broncos CB Perrish Cox to a two-year contract.

Cox did not play in 2011 after being cut last September. As a rookie in 2010, Cox played in 15 games with nine starts, recording 58 tackles, 14 passes defensed, one interception and two forced fumbles. He had been a fifth-round draft choice in 2010.

Cox was arrested in December 2010 on two counts of sexual assault of a victim who was deemed unable to assess her condition. A jury found Cox not guilty earlier this month. He could face a suspension from commissioner Roger Goodell for violating the league's personal-conduct policy.

The way we see it

Cox, who played under Niners DB coach Ed Donatell in Denver, adds depth at cornerback, where free agent Carlos Rogers is suddenly far from a slam dunk to be re-signed. There are some league observers who think Cox could contend for a starting CB role, but it's much more likely second-year pro Chris Culliver would replace Rogers in the starting lineup if the Pro Bowler departed.

Cox could also figure prominenty in the kick-return mix as a possible replacement for Ted Ginn, another free agent. Cox finished his career at Oklahoma State with the third-most kickoff return yards in FBS history (2,804) along with a school-record four kickoff returns for TDs.
