The Seahawks released former first-round CB Marcus Trufant on Wednesday, the team announced.

"Out of respect for Marcus and his family, we've decided to release him today so that he has an opportunity to explore the full window of unrestricted free agency and the options that go along with it," GM John Schneider said in a statement released by the team. "Marcus has done so much for this organization, but because of the changing landscape of the NFL, tough decisions have to be made and this is the correct thing to do at this time."

Trufant, the 11th overall pick by Seattle in 2003, played in only four games last season because of a back injury. He missed only one start in his first six seasons.

Trufant's best season came in 2007, when he had seven interceptions and earned a Pro Bowl nod.

According to Brian McIntyre of Football Outsiders, the Seahawks clear over $4.4 million in room under the salary cap by releasing Trufant.
