The Titans announced on Monday that they have placed the franchise tag on S Michael Griffin. The deadline for teams to use the tag is Monday at 4:00 p.m. ET.
Griffin, set to enter his sixth NFL season, has been one of Tennessee's top defenders in recent years. He has played in all 80 regular season games since he was drafted in the first round out of Texas in 2007. Last season he had 75 tackles to go along with seven passes defensed.
The move means the Titans will not be franchising CB Cortland Finnegan. Finnegan is expected to be one of the most sought-after defensive backs on the market.
Griffin is the third safety franchised this offseason, joining Tyvon Branch of the Raiders and Dashon Goldson of the 49ers. All will earn approximately $6.2 million in 2012 if they sign the franchise tender.
