Giants P Steve Weatherford received the franchise tag on Monday. He had a career-high net punting average of 39.2 yards in his first year with the Giants. Pro Football Talk first reported the move.
Weatherford came to the Giants from the Jets last offseason. He began his career with the Saints in 2006 and played for New Orleans, Kansas City and Jacksonville in 2008 before heading to the Jets for the 09-10 seasons.
Weatherford was clutch for the Giants in the playoffs. In the team's Super Bowl win over the Patriots, Weatherford dropped three of his four punts inside the 20-yard line.
Weatherford is the third punter to ever receive the franchise tag, joining Michael Koenen of the Falcons and Todd Sauerbrun of the Panthers.
The way we see it
If Weatherford and the Giants cannot come to a long-term agreement — which both sides have said is the ultimate goal — then he would play this season for $2.6 milliom. It's a fair price to pay for a player whose steadying force and fine excecutiuon helped steady a very unsettled part of the team's game in 2010. Weatherford had two excellent, field-changing punts in the Super Bowl and helped the team win a title.
