The Broncos announced on Monday that they used their franchise tag on PK Matt Prater.

Prater made 76 percent of his field goals in 2011, a decrease in accuracy from the 2009-10 seasons, when he made more than 85 percent in each year. However, he showed a strong leg last season, making three kicks of longer than 50 yards. Prater also was clutch, going a perfect 3-for-3 in overtime games.

The 27-year old kicker also was fantastic on kickoffs. More than 68 percent of his kicks resulted in touchbacks in 2011.

"Placing the franchise tag on Matt Prater ensures that he'll be a Bronco in 2012," executive VP of football operations John Elway tweeted out Monady afternoon. "Matt's a very talented kicker & important part of our team. This gives us the ability to continue working on a long-term agreement."

Prater is the first Broncos player to receive franchise tag since 2002, when the team applied it to PK Jason Elam.
