The Saints will restructure the contract of DE Will Smith to create more salary cap space, PFW correspondent Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported.

According to the report, Smith's base salary this season was expected to be $7 million this season, along with other bonuses making his total salary cap figure $10.15 million. Under the new, restructured contract, he will be paid the same amount, but much of his salary will go into a signing bonus, lowering the amount of cap space he takes.

Smith had 6½ sacks last season for the Saints in 14 games.

New Orleans is trying to create as much salary cap space as possible, as they have several important free agents they'd like to re-sign. QB Drew Brees, WR Marques Colston, OG Carl Nicks and CB Tracy Porter are the top priorities among the team's free agents.
