Last season was a rough one for the Panthers' defense. Carolina ranked 28th in yards allowed and 27th in points allowed as defensive coordinator Sean McDermott weathered a storm of injuries in his first year serving under head coach Ron Rivera.
PFW asked Rivera, a former defensive coordinator, at the NFL Scouting Combine if he would take a more hands-on approach to the defense in his second season at the helm, and it sounds like he will.
"Now that I've gone through the first season and kind of (have) an understanding of what's expected of me, I think I can help a little bit more on the defensive side," Rivera said. "The one thing you learn and you adjust to is really what's needed and what's called upon for the head coach to do in terms of his duties. That was a little bit different for me, obviously. I can be involved more with that side of the ball."
