From a numbers standpoint, the Giants need tight ends. Badly, said head coach Tom Coughlin. The Super Bowl injuries to TEs Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum (both torn ACLs) have left the position quite thin. "Whether it's (through the) draft or whatever, we're going to have to have some way of compensating so that we have enough people in camp to be able to work," Coughlin said at the Combine. "That's what the issue is." But there also is the question of whether the Giants needed to bolster the position prior to these players getting hurt. Some have said the team lacked a dynamic player at the position — sort of the new-breed receiving tight end — even with Ballard's unexpected breakout. "It would be a nice thing," Coughlin said of the prospect of bringing in a great athlete at the position. "We had a pretty good combination, we thought, coming in, in terms of people who could block, people who could run up the field, that type of thing." With both injured players facing lengthy rehab schedules, according to Coughlin, the team might have to take what it can get to help out.
