Hatcher: Cowboys need leader

The Cowboys have a leadership void. That's the opinion of one man in the middle of the situation, Dallas DE Jason Hatcher.

Hatcher was asked this week who the Cowboys' leader is.

"Dude, I've got to be honest with you: That's a good question," Hatcher told KESN-FM, according to FoxSports.com. "I really don't know. It's just another thing we really need. ... We don't have that. We've got the talent. We've got everything we need (except) a Ray Lewis. When Ray Lewis speaks, everybody listens to him. A guy like that, we really don't got that. I think we definitely need somebody like that."

Once recognized as "America's Team," the Cowboys have won only one playoff game since 1996.

"You've got to have somebody hold you accountable," Hatcher said. "With a leader like (Lewis), everybody is accountable and guys aren't doing their own thing. (Lewis) is in there. Everybody's going in one direction. So once you have that, you'll be good. We're still looking for it."

The way we see it

Hatcher's comments aren't likely to sit well with Tony Romo or DeMarcus Ware — or Jerry Jones or Jason Garrett, for that matter — but considering the team's tendency to self-destruct late in the season, they should be taken seriously. Perhaps the Cowboys should focus their free-agent efforts on signing a player with genuine leadership ability, since they're already a relatively talented team.
