The retirement of Ricky Williams leaves the Ravens lacking in veteran depth at running back behind Ray Rice. With Williams retiring, the Ravens have two other backups on the roster — second-year pro Anthony Allen and first-year pro Damien Berry. Also, fourth-year pro Matt Lawrence is a restricted free agent who can be retained with a tender offer. However, the way we hear it, the Ravens are confident in their depth, even with Williams looking to be out of the picture. The club has other offseason needs to address, with the offensive line and LB corps positions to watch, we're told.

Though Rice is slated to be an unrestricted free agent, it is clear the club is prepared to give him the franchise tag if a multiyear pact cannot be reached. Rice has been very dependable since becoming a starter in 2009, averaging 357 touches per season and never missing a game, and whoever backs him up isn't going to get a lot of work. Nevertheless, Williams gave the Ravens an experienced alternative.
