The Bengals hired former Raiders head coach Hue Jackson on Friday. He is slated to assist the defensive backs and special teams.

"Hue is a tremendous addition to our staff," Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said. "I relied on Hue greatly when he was with us (in 2004-06), and his success overall in the NFL, including being selected for a head-coaching position, is well documented. He has expertise in all aspects of the game, and we are fortunate to have obtained his services."

Jackson was the wide receivers coach with Cincinnati from 2004-06. He was fired after the 2011 season, his first as head coach of the Raiders. He was Oakland's offensive coordinator in 2010.

According to the Bengals, Jackson will work closely with DBs coach Mark Carrier and special-teams coach Darrin Simmons.

The way we see it

Though Jackson's work primarily has been on the offensive side of the ball, he got some experience coaching special teams early in his collegiate career, and his unique perspective could be valuable to the defense. Moreover, he could be a valuable advisor to Lewis, who's entering his 10th season as the Bengals' head coach. Finally, the Bengals' coaches are more involved in the scouting process than perhaps any other team, so Jackson's addition gives Cincinnati another set of experienced eyes and ears as predraft preparations start to ramp up.
