Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall is expected to begin the 2012 season on the physically-unable-to-perform list.
GM Kevin Colbert talked to reporters on Monday and said, "I never feel good about an ACL for a year." Mendenhall tore his ACL in the team's regular-season finale against the Browns. Scott Brown of the Pittsburgh Review-Tribune said Colbert added there is a good chance Mendenhall won't be ready for the start of next season.
Mendenhall's backup, Isaac Redman, rushed for 121 yards in the team's playoff loss to the Broncos. The Steelers also have Jonathan Dwyer and John Clay.
Mendenhall, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract, rushed for 928 yards on 228 carries in 2011, scoring nine touchdowns.
Colbert also said that the team has not made a decision on veteran WR Hines Ward. NFL Network's Jason La Canfora reported last weekend that the team is expected to cut Ward.
