Highly ranked 2012 draft prospect Dre Kirkpatrick has cleared an obstacle remaining in his path to the NFL. According to a Twitter post from Liz Mullen of SportsBusiness Journal, the marijuana possession charges against the top cornerback have been dismissed.

Kirkpatrick was arrested five days after declaring for the 2012 NFL draft, along with former Crimson Tide DB Chris Rogers. The pair of former Alabama players was taken in for the possession of 7.9 grams (0.28 ounces) of marijauna, according to the incident report cited by

Both former Crimson Tide players were released on $120 bond and they were set to appear in court on Feb. 21. Rogers admitted to purchasing the marijuana in the incident report, whereas Kirkpatrick admitted to being in the vehicle when the purchase was made but said he did not know at the time that Rogers was purchasing drugs. Both men were under the influence at the time of arrest, according to the incident report. With the charges against Kirkpatrick now dismissed, Rogers will likely take the brunt of whatever punishment the courts hand out.

PFW senior editor Nolan Nawrocki considers the Alabama defensive back to be the third-best corner in the draft. Nawrocki had Kirkpatrick falling to the Lions with the 23rd pick in his first mock draft.
