Lions head coach Jim Schwartz told PFW's Eric Edholm at the Super Bowl that he hoped the club would be able to re-sign DE Cliff Avril, who will be one of the top free-agent pass rushers available if he can test unrestricted free agency. However, Schwartz noted the challenges a team faces as it tries to keep as many talented core players as possible. "A couple years ago, we were trying to get rid of all of the bad players," Schwartz said. "Now, we're taking about how we're going to keep our good players. I think it's a sign of the way we've drafted. I think we've drafted well. We've also signed very well in free agency. And when that happens, you're going to have some difficult decisions to make, and it's going to be increasingly hard to hold a team together. But obviously, (Avril's) had great success in our system. He's young, he's developed with us and was (an) important part of our defense this year and hopefully in the future."
