After an often-promising but injury-plagued first two seasons with the Buccaneers, DT Gerald McCoy is not allowing the setbacks to crush his spirit.
"I'm ready for a breakout season," McCoy told PFW this week.
McCoy, the third overall pick in the 2010 draft, suffered biceps tears in each of his first two seasons. Both injuries landed him on injured reserve, sidelining him for 10 games last season and the final three games of '10.
"This season I started off fast," McCoy said. "It got cut short. It wasn't in God's plans for me to finish, but hopefully, I've been praying that next year it is."
McCoy said he has been training and rehabbing in San Diego with trainer Todd Durkin and had yet to speak with the Bucs' new head coach, Greg Schiano, when PFW caught up with him. He was very encouraged by a conversation with Patriots head coach Bill Belichick at Super Bowl media day, though.
"For arguably the best coach in the NFL, with his résumé to give my new coach the stamp of approval, I can't hope for anything better than that," he said.
