The Super Bowl long has been a massive moneymaker for all involved. For some of those not involved, who allegedly tried to sell counterfeit sportswear and merchandise, this Super Bowl is already looking like a dud.

According to the Associated Press, federal officials said that authorities seized 42,000 items worth more than $4.8 million in Operation Fake Sweep, taking fake jerseys, ball caps, T-shirts, jackets and other souvenirs from a wide variety of vendors. That is up from $3.4 million worth seized last year by authorities.

The government is also cracking down on cyberspace, busting 300 websites accused of illegally streaming telecasts or selling counterfeit sports merchandise, as well as other counterfeit sports items, seizing approximately $1.6 million worth of counterfeit MLB, NHL and NBA items.
