The Cardinals blocked WR coach John McNulty from interviewing for the Buccaneers' offensive coordinator position, according to a report by NFL Network's Jason La Canfora.

The report says that McNulty would likely have been hired by Tampa, considering that for years he was the right-hand man at Rutgers of new Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano. The team hired Schiano on Thursday, and the next day the team requested permission from the Cardinals to interview McNulty. Arizona reportedly denied the request right away.

The report speculates that the Cardinals might promote McNulty to QB coach if they don't hire Todd Haley to fill the position.

The way we see it

Although assistant coaches have a lot of freedom to interview for head-coaching jobs without their teams being able to block them, position coaches don't have the same leeway when it comes to interviewing for coordinator positions. Their teams can block them from doing so, and often do.
