Previously resistant to building the Vikings' new stadium on the Metrodome site, team owner Zygi Wilf changed his tone Wednesday, telling the Associated Press that he was "optimistic" the Metrodome site would work.
Wilf said that the team wants a new stadium in the Twin Cities. even if it means building on the Metrodome site. The team's issues with the site are numerous, from its limited upside when it comes to restaurant building and creating a new downtown area to its limited parking and tailgating space. However, it appears that Wilf might be willing to look past such difficulties in the wake of an announcement by Gov. Mark Dayton that the other two sites the team was looking at are unworkable.
Another drawback to building on the Metrodome site is that the team would be forced to relocate for three years to TCF Bank Stadium, where the University of Minnesota plays. In addition to the difficulty of hosting two teams at the same facility, the stadium seats only 50,000, which would make it the smallest stadium in the NFL by 13,000 seats.
