The decision to hire former Colts DB coach Alan Williams as the Vikings' new defensive coordinator wasn't the big-fish hire some fans wanted, but it does give us a pretty good idea of how things will run next season. First, it means the Vikings do not plan to switch radically to a 3-4 defense, as had been rumored late in the season. That is good news for DE Jared Allen, who might not have been a good fit in that scheme and is coming off a 22-sack season as a 4-3 rusher. Second, it also means that head coach Leslie Frazier plans to give Williams a big assist as the two start to work together through OTAs and minicamps, reinstalling the Tampa-2 base defense that the team has run predominantly the past several seasons. The Colts also used a lot of other three-deep coverages, so they won't be one-dimensional. Now the key is finding some cornerbacks and safeties who fit that scheme and help improve the coverage, which was a nightmare at times in 2011.
