The Dolphins announced Friday night the hiring of Joe Philbin as the team's next head coach.

Philbin, whose stock rose the past two seasons in charge of the high-powered Packers offense, including PFW/PFWA MVP Aaron Rodgers, also was rumored to be a candidate in Oakland.

"We are thrilled to have Joe Philbin join the Miami Dolphins as our head coach," said owner Stephen Ross, according to the team. "Joe has all the attributes that we were looking for when we started this process. (GM) Jeff Ireland and I felt Joe was the right choice to bring the Dolphins back to the success we enjoyed in the past. I know I join our fans in welcoming him as the newest member of the Dolphin family."

"I want to thank Steve Ross and Jeff Ireland for giving me the opportunity to become the head coach of one of the premier franchises in professional sports," Philbin said. "I also want to thank the Green Bay Packers for all the support the organization has given me during my time there. The Dolphins have a strong nucleus to build around, and working with everyone in the organization, I know that together we will return the team to its winning tradition.

"I have seen how much the fans in South Florida care about the Dolphins, and that passion is one reason why I'm really excited to be here. I'm looking forward to their support, and I can't wait to get started."

Philbin will be the 10th head coach in Dolphins history. Ross, Philbin and Ireland will address the media on Saturday afternoon. Philbin beat out other finalists Todd Bowles and Mike McCoy for the job. The Dolphins' first choice, Jeff Fisher, chose to coach the Rams last Friday.

The way we see it

Ross' desire for a high-powered offense in Miami is likely a big reason the team decided to hire Philbin, who has a lot of respect around the league for what he has done in Green Bay. Philbin also knows QB Matt Flynn better than most coaches. Flynn, who is set to be one of the most sought-after free agents, could be a target for a Miami team still looking for its franchise quarterback.

Bowles could be hired as the team's defensive coordinator. He did interview for the Raiders' head-coaching job. Should he return, it would keep some continuity for a defense that was one of the league's better units. Philbin also might want to bring some Packers assistants to Miami with him to fill out the staff, if he's allowed to do so.
