The Browns have hired former Rams WR coach Nolan Cromwell to their coaching staff, PFW Browns correspondent Tony Grossi of The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported Wednesday.

The Plain Dealer also reported that the Browns won't retain senior assistant/offense Keith Gilbertson. Cromwell could at least initially receive the "senior assistant" title, The Plain Dealer reported.

Cromwell was the Rams' WR coach the last two seasons, working with Shurmur, who was the Rams' offensive coordinator at the time, in 2010.

Cromwell was also a longtime member of Browns president Mike Holmgren's coaching staffs in Seattle and Green Bay. Cromwell was the Packers' special-teams coach from 1992-97 and Green Bay's WR coach in '98. He joined Holmgren with the Seahawks in 1999, serving as Seattle's WR coach the next nine seasons. Before joining the Rams, Cromwell was Texas A&M's offensive coordinator in 2008 and '09.

Ex-Texas A&M head coach Mike Sherman, who was fired in December after four seasons on the job, is a "presumed candidate" to be the Browns' offensive coordinator, The Plain Dealer reported. Sherman has also interviewed for the Buccaneers' head-coaching vacancy.

The way we see it

Cromwell's ties to Shurmur and Holmgren make him a logical addition to the coaching staff. How the Browns plan to proceed at offensive coordinator remains to be seen.
